Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps

Threats to Fleurieu Peninsula swamps include clearing, drainage and water extraction, and changed landuse such as grazing

Overview

The Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps are a distinct and unique ecological community that is protected under the Australian Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The swamps are listed as a Critically Endangered Ecological Community under this Act. This listing recognises that the long-term survival of the Fleurieu Peninsula swamps is vulnerable to ongoing threats, particularly due to the small patch sizes of the remaining swamps.

In 1993 only 25% of the Fleurieu Peninsula swamps former distribution remained. The current distribution is probably less than this figure as vegetation clearance, water extraction, changed land use and inappropriate management continues.
